Store Focus: Showroom- Penang, Malaysia
Part 2 of Cazhmere’s Penang streetwear tour was a visit to long running store Showroom over at Queensbay Mall. The Showroom franchise has been at the forefront of the streetwear scene in Malaysia with a number of stores all over the country. We chatted to Penang owner Ch Who and discussed his store’s long run of 5 years.
Showroom Penang was the cure to feelings of home sickness I was experiencing by the end of the trip. I’d walk into all these shops in the malls and they were full of crazy honkie (hong-kongian) clothing that is nowhere near fitting me. I am a regular sized guy by Australian standards but for this HK stuff i was like Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk when i was trying on clothes - nearly ripped so much shit. Showroom was a snap back to reality…
Showroom reminded me alot of Australian stores. Showroom, like Australian streetwear stores, places a large emphasis on US brands. Showroom had a great range of brands but had a crazy amount of stock from Obey, Stussy and X Large.
They had some amazing gear from these brands. Although the brands are somewhat mainstream, Showroom stocks their more rare and just down right more awesome stuff. The 3 brands were clearly the stores focus but they also had a few tees from more exclusive brands like Undefeated and Neighborhood.
Showroom does however share similarities to the Asian streetwear store model - Bearbrick all over the store, Bape books in the window and a couple Kaws prints.
Showroom shows how they have been doing so well in a difficult market like Malaysia with their stock - they choose wisely; they know what sells.
